Hampi, also known as a "City of Ruins," is a World Heritage Site in Karnataka State, India. Around 1500 AD, Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagar empire and, according to some accounts, the second-largest city in the world. It declined in importance over the next centuries, and today you can explore the ruins of many temples and other structures spread out over a large area. Hampi was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986, and many efforts have been made to restore the site's former glory.
